Q: Who/What is the Matterwave Collective?
A: The Matterwave Collective is a not-for-profit artist collective started in 2002 by Dan Richert, Nick Ruest, and Christopher Todd. The original purpose was to gather our friends, most of whom were artists, together in new ways and elevate the collective visibility of each other’s work.
Q: How do I become a part?
A: In the collective’s previous incarnation [up until March 2007], We were actively looking for people to host. However, things have changed, and currently there are no plans to host or bring any new people unsolicited, sorry.
Q: That’s not fair!
A: Let me elaborate on our policy, and that’s hardly a question. Currently The Matterwave Collective is focused on raising visibility and promoting artists from the inside out-if we like what you’re doing, you’ll hear from us. The people involved in our releases have piqued our interest in one way or another, and have been asked to participate. We cannot afford to have an open-member policy.
Q: Do you have a mission statement?
A: Yes! See about
Q: What is Foci 1.0?
A: Foci 1.0 is The Matterwave Collective’s first act of rebirth. It is a way for us to reintroduce ourselves online, give artists whose work we enjoy an outlet, and promote collaboration between those included.
Q: Huh? Foci?
A: Please speak in complete sentences. ‘Foci’ is defined basically as term meaning multiple focal points. It was chosen as the Foci series of releases will be multi-disciplinary.
Q: What does Foci 1.0 include?
A: Foci 1.0 is The Matterwave Collective’s first showcase. It was designed to include any type of art that can be zipped and stored on the internet. Video, Images, Text, and Audio are a part of the showcase.
Q: Why ‘1.0’?
A:It has been designated 1.0 because it is the first finished product we've released. Our releases may all be series, but expect the next foci to follow suit.
Q: Who was eligible to be included on Foci 1.0?
A: Foci 1.0, like all Matterwave Releases, includes people whose work we admire. They have been asked to participate in the hopes that it may raise awareness to the entire collective’s work. After the release, check the site itself for profiles and other information on those involved.
Q: Where will the collection be released?
A: The collection will be hosted by archive.org. After it’s released, we’ll have introductory pages and showcase slide-type works on MW itself, with a link to the whole collection on the site.
Q: What’s with the profiles?
A: The profile system was not created to emulate a social network site, but rather to provide a contact sheet, bio, and information of sorts chosen by the person involved. Expect some of them to be more complete than others, as they (like all of Matterwave) are completely voluntary.
